Many in Mid-Ohio Valley know what its like to spend countless
hours walking laps around Grand Central Mall while they shop.
For members of the SoleMates Walking Club, the mall is also
a great place to get fit.
A collaborative effort between Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital
and Grand Central Mall, SoleMates is a walking program that
encourages people in the community to choose a health lifestyle
through exercise.
SoleMates do their walking at Grand Central Mall between 8:00
am and 10:00 am before shoppers arrive. SoleMates are also free
to use the mall at whatever time is convenient with them.
One of the major benefits of walking at the mall is that it
offers security, a level walking surface, a regulated temperature
controlled environment and aesthetic surroundings. The distance
around the inside perimeter of the mall, including the food
court area, is 1/2 mile.
SoleMates meet at Grand Central Mall on the first Tuesday of
each month at 9:00 am and 6:45 pm for presentations on a wide
range of topics such as walking safety, choosing the proper
walking shoe, cooking with less fat, etc. Blood pressure checks
are available at all meetings.
There is no fee to join SoleMates and all offerings, such as
blood pressure checks, are also free.
New members receive a photo ID badge, useful to receive various
discounts at some mall stores. After attending three meetings,
members receive a free SoleMates T-shirt.
Members are eligible for additional incentive prizes as they
continue their membership.
Recently, SoleMates have had the opportunity to do their walking
outside the mall. Many walkers have taken advantage of the cooler
morning temperatures and enjoyed the fresh air and change of
scenery by walking around the outside of the mall.
