Get educated
Diabetes Wellness Fair to offer information and awareness
With more than 20 million people—or 7 percent of the U.S. population—suffering from diabetes, the severity of the disease is apparent. However, while an estimated 14.6 million have been diagnosed – another 6.2 million don’t even know they have it. Each day there are more than 2,200 new cases diagnosed, and it’s the third leading cause of death in the U.S.
There’s no cure for diabetes, but there is hope. Through proper nutrition, exercise and medication, diabetes can be a very manageable disease.
Perhaps the biggest challenge in diabetes management is creating awareness.
That’s the driving force behind Diabetes Awareness Day. Diabetes Awareness Day was established by American Diabetes Association to increase the awareness of the diabetes epidemic in our nation.
Diabetes Awareness Day activities include screening for diabetes to promote early diagnosis and treatment to prevent complications of diabetes. Diabetes is a disease that the person who has the disease must be educated and empowered to make daily decisions regarding management of the disease on a day-to-day basis. This is why it is imperative for EVERY person diagnosed with diabetes to attend a Management Education Program.
A special Diabetes Awareness Community Fair will be offered by CCMH’s Diabetes Wellness Center on March 27, from 5 – 8 pm at Wayside United Methodist Church in Vienna.
The event, which is free and open to the public, will feature blood pressure testing, blood pressure screening, foot exams, hemoglobin A1c screening ($5), and eye exams.
In addition, the fair will also offer two educational presentations. Dr Jason Barton will present “Are You Physically Fit?” at 6 pm. A cooking demonstration, “Quick and Easy Meals” will be featured at 7 pm.
Vendors will be available to demonstrate diabetes care products, and the Parkersburg Lions Club will offer free eye exams and provide information on the link between diabetes and eye health.
