STAR

Study of Tamoxifen and Raloxifene

The Community Comprehensive Cancer Center at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital is one for over 400 centers in the United States, Puerto Rico, and Canada participating in STAR.

Tamoxifen is a drug that has been studied for over 20 years and is approved by the FDA for reducing the incidence of invasive breast cancer in women at high risk for the disease.  It is believed that raloxifene, though not as thoroughly researched, may have the same ability.

STAR is being conducted by the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast & Bowel Project (NSABP) and is supported by the National Cancer Institute (NCI).

The NSABP has successfully conducted large-scale, randomized clinical research trials for more than 40 years.  Results from NSABP studies have changed the way breast cancer is treated and potentially prevented.

Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in North American women.  It is a leading cause of cancer death, second only to lung cancer.

Do you know your risk of developing breast cancer?

It depends upon a combination of lifestyle and personal traits.  A health care professional at Camden-Clark's Community Comprehensive Cancer Center can help you determine your individual risk by simply asking you a few questions.

Who is eligible to participate in STAR?

Postmenopausal women age 35 or older who are at increased risk for developing breast cancer.

Why participate?

In this trial, your health will be carefully monitored by medical professionals committed to fighting breast cancer.  Taking part in STAR is one way you can play an active role in your own future health.  You will also be a partner in a study that is contributing to medical knowledge about ways to decrease the occurrence of breast cancer in future generations of women.  Participation in this trial requires virtually no change from your daily routine.

Who should I call?

Call Janet Packard, Clinical Coordinator, at 304-424-2585.  To locate a participating STAR center outside the Mid-Ohio Valley, call 1-800-4-cancer.

Your interest in volunteering does not obligate you.  All queries will be held in the strictest confidence.  The principal investigator for this study at the Community Compressive Cancer Center is Nik Shah M.D.

Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital has been doing clinical trials through NSABP for 25 years.
